Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that was first popularized during the 1920's in France and globalized through the 20's and 30s.  The Chrysler building is an example of this ornate style.  Art Deco represents luxury, glamour, exuberance and is best reflected in the booming 1920s.

Art Deco features geometric shapes, clear and precise lines, and decoration which is attached to the structure, often in the form of metal or ceramic structures.
